Why you should ... or not read Paranormalcy

Currently I am reading Paranormalcy by Kiersten White at the moment and I am enjoying it very much (and my autocorrect recognised neither title nor the authors name, grr).

The story

A brilliant idea. I have never read anything like it. The main character Evelyn is a "normal" sixteen-year old girl (surprise) who works for the IPCA, the International Paranormal Containment Agency because of her special ability which makes her unique in the whole wide world. She is able to see through glamours of any paranormal being, for example instead of the sexy young guy the vampire wants you to see, she can see the real dead corpse underneath. However, Evie is quite lonely in this IPCA centre because her parents abandoned her when she was very small and her single real friend is a mermaid with whom she can only communicate through a mechanical translator.

After a kind of paranormal human (coincidently a hot guy) breaks into the Centre and lots of paranormals are being killed by some weird girl on fire she finds out that she isn't as "normal" as she thought. Obviously, we are not surprised.

The style of writing

good. Extremely funny, for example Raquel (manager of the center and in some way a substitute mother for Evie) who communicates a whole lot through sighs which are translated into "normal" English.

The characters

The main character is the typical teen girl who is sarcastic, kick ass but also lonely and crushes on the new and coincidently nice hot guy who draws pictures of her and holds her hand to comfort her. Also, other characters are quite charming, namely Raquel and Evie's mermaid friend Lish.

The cover

Well, I am not a fan of covers with real people on it. One can be so creative when it comes to these things but then they choose these weird models in weird poses. This isn't a book I would proudly show in my bookshelf, so I got it on my kindle which is fair enough because it's so much more practical for traveling.

conclusion

--> A book full of the typical YA clichés but new ideas and good humour to make you laugh.

UPDATE:
It's a trilogy but DON'T read the follow-up books. I have the feeling that author just ran out of ideas what to do with the characters. It took me ages to finish it because it was so boring and kitschy.
